In Langrolay-sur-Rance, the château de Beauchêne belongs to the particular family of malouinières, the country houses built near the Rance river by Saint-Malo's shipowners and naval officers. Rebuilt in the early 18th century for Jacques III Gouin de Beauchêne, a senior officer of the Saint-Malo admiralty, it shows a deliberately austere architecture, with most attention given to an interior oak staircase with square, pear-shaped balusters. The park still bears traces of the earlier manor, including a gateway dated 1659, while the outbuildings, added in the 19th century, display a more decorative Italian-inspired style than the main house.
