To make a day of it

Wilde Schneeburg stands in Oberried (Landkreis Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Wilde Schneeburg is a former spur castle, now vanished, near Oberried in the Landkreis Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Baden-Württemberg. First recorded in 1302, it is thought to have been built in the second half of the 13th century, likely by the Schnewlin family of Freiburg, before passing to the Kolman brothers and being destroyed by a Freiburg force in 1314. No standing walls remain: only heaps of rubble stone, scattered pottery sherds, roof and floor tile fragments, and pieces of sandstone window openings mark the site, perched on a rocky spur above the Bruggatal valley.

What to know

  • No walls or standing structures remain, only ground traces and archaeological fragments.
  • The site sits on a forested rocky spur about 300 metres above the Schneeberger Hof, meaning an uphill walk is required.
  • There are no opening hours, fees, or visitor facilities since this is an unimproved ruin site.
  • The visit suits hikers and local history enthusiasts rather than those expecting a conventional castle tour.
