To make a day of it

Wichmannsburg stands in Bienenbüttel (Landkreis Uelzen), in Lower Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Wichmannsburg was a moated stronghold built on an island in the Ilmenau river, at the site of today's village of Wichmannsburg in the municipality of Bienenbüttel. It is said to have been raised in the 10th century by Count Wichmann I to defend Billung territory against the Wends, and was besieged in 955 by Duke Hermann against the founder's rebellious sons. It was given up around 1332, when Lüneburg's authorities had the mills and weirs that protected it torn down, and no trace of it survives above ground today. It is therefore not a place one visits, but a piece of history known mainly through documents and archaeological surveys.

What to know

  • No remains of the Wichmannsburg can be seen today.
  • The former site of the stronghold is now a fenced private pasture with no public access.
  • Traces of the moats and the original island have only been confirmed through aerial photographs and laser surveys.
  • It should not be confused with a second, later stronghold built from 1361 onward on a nearby hill, close to today's parsonage of St George's Church.
