The Elbschloss Bleckede stands on the site of a medieval stronghold once held by the dukes of Saxe-Lauenburg, originally raised on a ridge once bordered by an arm of the Elbe river. Only a nine-metre stump of the original keep survives, now fitted out as a lookout tower over the valley. The present buildings combine a timber-framed north wing dating from the early seventeenth century with a baroque west wing from the mid-eighteenth century, which now houses exhibition rooms. The complex today houses an information centre for the Elbe Valley biosphere reserve and the local tourist office.
