Schloss Wehningen stands in Amt Neuhaus (Landkreis Lüneburg), in Lower Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Wehningen, in Amt Neuhaus, in the Landkreis Lüneburg, in Lower Saxony, no longer stands as a visible building: the manor house that once occupied this site on an old bend of the Elbe was demolished in 1979-1980 by East German border troops as part of the fortification of the inner German border. The place still bears traces of settlement going back to the late 13th century, when a timber stronghold was built around 1285 by a lord connected to the Duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg, followed by several rebuildings up to a moated manor of the 16th century and a new house erected in 1888. What remains today is limited to earthworks: an oval plateau surrounded by a moat, remnants of an inner rampart, and a few foundation fragments and a gate arch. A visit here is really an encounter with a historic site rather than a standing building.
What to know
- No building stands today: visitors will find only an oval plateau surrounded by a moat, traces of an inner rampart, and a few foundation remains and a gate arch.
- The manor house still standing here in the 20th century was demolished in 1979-1980 by East German border troops.
- The site lies in open countryside near an old bend of the Elbe and is best approached as a place for a walk rather than a monument visit.
- No information on protected status, opening hours or admission fees is available for this site.
- The wrought-iron gate from the former schloss was smuggled into West Germany in 1961 and rebuilt elsewhere, so it cannot be seen on site.
