Burg Bodenteich stands on an artificial mound where the lords of Bodendike built their fortified seat around 1250, in the middle of wet lowland terrain. Destroyed during the Hildesheim collegiate feud around 1520, it was rebuilt as a former administrative house in brick and half timber, alongside a bakehouse and brewhouse that were later reconstructed. The fourteenth century keep, shortened after a fire in 1808, now carries a viewing platform reached at a height of 4.5 metres. The complex today houses the local tourist office and a small museum devoted to the site's history.
