The Weißenburg stood on a raised terrace of the fertile Thuringian basin, between Sömmerda and Weißensee, at the northwestern edge of Sömmerda's municipal area. First recorded in 1211 during the siege of the nearby Runneburg, it was destroyed and rebuilt in 1248 to resume its defensive role for the regional stronghold.
