To make a day of it

Turmhügel Adlitz stands in Ahorntal (Landkreis Bayreuth), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

In Adlitz, a hamlet within the municipality of Ahorntal, an earthen mound marks the site of a former motte castle that no longer survives above ground. First recorded in the early 11th century, the timber and earth stronghold was destroyed and rebuilt several times, during the Hussite Wars and again during the Peasants' War, before being levelled in the early 18th century to make way for the Schloss Adlitz, whose ground floor incorporates remains of the earlier structure. The site today is better understood as a place of historical memory than as a standing building.

What to know

  • No visible remains of the original motte survive, only the shape of the ground hints at its former presence.
  • The site lies at the centre of the village of Adlitz, surrounded by present-day buildings.
  • The Schloss Adlitz, built over the earlier remains, is not further documented here.
  • No opening hours, fees or organised access are documented for this site.
