To make a day of it
Stederburg stands in Salzgitter (Salzgitter), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.
The Stederburg was a fortification built between 924 and 933 west of Salzgitter-Thiede, on a slight rise near the Thiedebach, meant to guard the crossings of the river Oker. No standing structure survives today: the site is known mainly through archaeological excavations carried out in 1996 and 1998, which uncovered a circular ditch nine metres wide enclosing a rampart 140 metres in diameter. Around the year 1000, a collegiate foundation for canonesses was established on the grounds of the outer bailey, giving rise to the Stift Steterburg, whose church now serves as an Evangelical parish church. What visitors can actually see today are remains of the ditch and rampart of that outer bailey, still traceable south of the Stift.
