To make a day of it

Schloss Wolgast stands in Wolgast (Landkreis Vorpommern-Greifswald), in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. Recorded dating: 15th century. No visits are on record for this building.

Wolgast Castle no longer stands: what remains of this former seat of the dukes of Pomerania-Wolgast today is simply its site, a small island in the Peenestrom still known as Castle Island. Built up from an earlier medieval stronghold and turned into a Renaissance residence from 1496 onward, it ranked among the major castles of northern Germany before being damaged repeatedly and finally pulled down around 1820, its stones reused for other buildings. No ruins can be visited, only a handful of surviving objects held in various exhibitions and a trace of the castle preserved in the town's coat of arms, a tower flanked by two griffins.
