Schloss Werneck stands in Werneck (Landkreis Schweinfurt), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Werneck stands in Werneck, in the Landkreis Schweinfurt, Bavaria, on the site of an earlier stronghold that burned down more than once over the centuries. The present building, erected between 1731 and 1747 for Prince-Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn, is a late work by the architect Balthasar Neumann. Converted into a medical institution from 1853 onward, it lost nearly all of its historic interiors except for the chapel. Today the palace houses hospital departments and is mainly viewed from the outside, though the chapel, a café and the surrounding park remain accessible.
What to know
- The main building can only be seen from the outside, as its historic rooms were destroyed when it became a hospital from 1853.
- Only the former Schlosskirche, designed by Balthasar Neumann, remains open to visitors, along with an on-site café.
- The park, combining a baroque garden and an English landscape section with a pond, can be freely explored around the palace.
- The site now functions as a hospital complex, which restricts movement to the immediate surroundings of the main building.
- The monument is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria.
