Schloss Schwarzenraben is a baroque moated castle built near the hamlet of Bökenförde, not far from Lippstadt, for the barons von Hoerde. Erected between 1748 and 1765 to designs by architect Johann Matthias Kitz, its interior decoration features stuccowork by the Metz brothers and ceiling paintings by the fresco painter Joseph Gregor Winck. Gutted by a fire in 1935 that left only the outer walls standing, it was rebuilt in the following years, including its rococo chapel completed in 1777, regarded as one of the finest in Westphalia.
What to know
- The castle stands at the edge of the hamlet of Bökenförde, surrounded by its moat and park, in the Kreis Soest.
- Much of today's interior dates from the rebuilding that followed the 1935 fire, which had left only the outer walls standing.
- The estate's chapel, completed in 1777, is considered one of the finest examples of rococo work in Westphalia.
- The estate changed hands several times in the late 20th century, with its library and part of its furnishings sold off in the 1990s before a private owner acquired the castle in 1998.
- The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in North Rhine-Westphalia.
