Schloss Rethmar stands in Sehnde, southeast of Hanover, on the site of a small medieval stronghold first recorded in 1332. The present west wing dates from a Renaissance building campaign begun around 1540, while the main house and east wing were added around 1700, when the complex was turned into a baroque three-wing residence arranged around a courtyard of honour. A sandstone portal on the west wing, bearing the combined Rutenberg-Steinberg coat of arms and the date 1575, along with the main portal dated 1710 and carrying the von Eltz family arms, mark these successive building phases.
