The Ruther Burg no longer exists: it was a medieval stronghold of the Bishopric of Hildesheim, built on the spot now occupied by the parish church in the Ruthe district of Sarstedt. Founded in the 13th century to secure episcopal territory against the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times before giving way to a manor estate and later an episcopal palace, which itself burned down in 1891. No visible remains of the original fortress survive today.
