Schloss Murnau overlooks the market town of Murnau am Staffelsee in Upper Bavaria, standing on the site of a thirteenth century residential tower whose remains still form a large part of today's west wing. Archaeological work carried out when the building was converted into a museum in the early 1990s made it one of the most thoroughly studied medieval structures in Bavaria, uncovering sliding shutters from 1233 said to be without parallel in the region. Having served for centuries as the administrative seat of Kloster Ettal and later as the town school, the building now houses the Schloßmuseum Murnau, dedicated to the local landscape, history and art.
