To make a day of it
Schloss Heusenstamm stands in Heusenstamm (Landkreis Offenbach), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Heusenstamm Castle stands in Heusenstamm, Hesse, on the site of a medieval stronghold once held by the lords of Heusenstamm. The complex today combines a rear castle, built where the original fortress stood and flanked by a tower known as the Bannturm, with a baroque front castle erected between 1663 and 1668 for Philipp Erwein von Schönborn. Visitors can see an ornate gateway added in 1764 for the visit of Emperor Francis I, decorated with two stone lions and the Schönborn coat of arms, along with a park featuring ponds and a lime-tree avenue that recall the former manorial garden. The front castle now houses Heusenstamm's town hall.
What to know
- The front castle houses the town hall, so the visit is mainly from the outside and through the surrounding park.
- A now dry moat, once fed by the Bieber stream, still encircles the complex.
- A Christmas market takes place on the second weekend of Advent, and a wine festival is held in summer.
- An open-air stage between the rear castle and the Bannturm hosts summer cultural events.
