Schloss Herrenbreitungen stands on the site of a Benedictine abbey founded in the 12th century atop a former fortified hill in Breitungen/Werra. The present complex, combining Romanesque remains with Renaissance architecture, took shape in the 16th century when Count Poppo XII of Henneberg had a new castle built incorporating parts of the dissolved monastery. Visitors today can see the three storey west wing with its spiral staircase towers, the remains of the castle tower, the Kornhaus with its hall over thirty metres long, and the neighbouring Romanesque basilica topped with a Renaissance cap. The grounds, enclosed by a stone wall, still hold the former monastery garden and a pond.
