To make a day of it

Schloss Harthausen stands in Harthausen (Landkreis Günzburg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Harthausen is a twin-winged manor house standing at Harthausen, within the municipality of Rettenbach in the Landkreis Günzburg, Bavaria. Its two side wings date from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and around 1760 a four-storey connecting block was added, giving the whole its present unified baroque appearance under the direction of a member of the Riedheim family, who acquired the estate in 1568 and still own it today. Above the gateway a stuccoed cartouche displays the Riedheim coat of arms alongside those of related noble families, Stauffenberg, Hornstein, Giel and Freyberg. The house and its grounds remain a private property and are not open to visitors.

What to know

  • The schloss and its grounds are private property of the von Riedheim family and cannot be visited inside.
  • The exterior, with its eighteenth-century facade and distinctive scrolled gables, can be seen from the public village surroundings.
  • A thorough restoration between 1972 and 1977 restored the facade's eighteenth-century colour scheme, with half of the windows painted in trompe l'oeil.
  • The curved remise buildings to the west form an honour courtyard, which is likewise not accessible to the public.
  • A tree and grass garden documented since 1560 still exists near the house but has no public access.
