Schloss Guttenburg stands on a rocky spur above the right bank of the Inn river, in Kraiburg am Inn. It was founded around 1285 by Duke Henry XIII, carried out by his ministerialis Henry of Taufkirchen, to keep watch over the Salzburg enclave of Mühldorf am Inn nearby. Burned down in 1426 during the Bavarian War and rebuilt at the end of the 15th century, the fortress lost its defensive character around 1660-1670 and during the 18th century, when it was turned into a Renaissance schloss with a baroque garden. The present building, an irregular five-sided complex around a closed courtyard, still has a moat and a gate tower topped with a baroque dome.
