To make a day of it
Burg Haag stands in Haag in Oberbayern (Landkreis Mühldorf am Inn), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Haag rises above the market town of Haag in Oberbayern with its tall square keep, the most striking survivor of what was once an extensive fortress now largely in ruins. Built in the twelfth century by the lords of Haga, the site later passed to the Fraunberg family and eventually to the Dukes of Bavaria. Visitors can still see the round curtain wall of the outer bailey, a gate tower, an eighteenth century outdoor staircase and the so called Lions' Bridge, while the keep itself, altered over several centuries, is open through regular guided tours.
What to know
- The keep, called the Schlossturm, can only be visited as part of a guided tour.
- The entrance to the tower is set high above ground level, reflecting its original defensive design.
- The outer remains, including the walls, staircase and bridge, can be seen freely around the market town.
- Weddings can be held inside the keep between May and October.
- Cultural events sometimes take place in the castle courtyard during summer.
