Schloss Berteroda stands in the eastern part of the village of Berteroda, which has been a district of the town of Eisenach since 1994. Built in 1626 atop the massive foundations of earlier structures, it retains traces of its turbulent past, including a loophole dated 1597 and a semicircular tower placed at the site's most exposed corner. The building combines a stone ground floor with a half-timbered upper storey, the product of repeated alterations over the centuries. Once a noble residence, then a school, an inn and finally a private home, it has undergone recent restoration work.
