To make a day of it

Schelmenburg stands in Frankfurt-Bergen-Enkheim (Frankfurt am Main), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Schelmenburg stands in the centre of Frankfurt-Bergen-Enkheim, in the old quarter of Bergen, between the streets Am Weißen Turm and Marktstraße. It was for centuries the seat of the Schelm von Bergen family, first recorded in 1194, though the building seen today is a small baroque water castle erected around 1700 on the foundations of the former medieval stronghold. Only the moat and the bridge survive from the original fortification, since the main house was rebuilt from the ground up under Friedrich Adolph Schelm zu Bergen. A sandstone relief at the entrance, showing the double headed imperial eagle, can still be seen.
