To make a day of it

Palais Toerring-Jettenbach stands in München (München), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 18th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Palais Toerring-Jettenbach stands in Munich, Bavaria, on Max-Joseph-Platz, facing the Residenz. Of the baroque palace built in the 18th century for Count von Törring-Jettenbach, only the north wing survives, reworked in the 19th century by Leo von Klenze into a colonnaded facade modelled on a Florentine foundling hospital. The rest of the building, destroyed during the Second World War, gave way to a modern structure that now houses shops, offices and apartments. What remains visible to visitors is chiefly this facade and arcade, the last trace of a once grand aristocratic residence.

What to know

  • The building is now a private complex combining shops, offices and apartments, and is not open for visits as a museum.
  • Only the north facade's arcade, designed by Leo von Klenze, and the 18th-century baroque portal, relocated into the inner courtyard, recall the original palace.
  • Exploration is limited to the exterior, best done on foot around Max-Joseph-Platz and Maximilianstraße.
  • A café occupies the arcade and a luxury boutique occupies the ground floor of the rebuilt structure.
  • The surrounding district is easily walkable, close to the Residenz and the Bavarian State Opera.
