To make a day of it

Haus Havixbeck stands in Havixbeck (Kreis Coesfeld), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Haus Havixbeck is one of the many moated manor houses, or Wasserschlösser, typical of the Münsterland region. Construction of the present building began in 1562 on the site of a medieval estate, and since the early 17th century the property has belonged to the von Twickel family, who still own it today. The main house and outbuildings form a horseshoe-shaped complex on an island ringed by a broad moat, and since the buildings are lived in and farmed privately, they can only be seen from outside, on guided tours arranged by the local tourist association. The surrounding landscape park, which still shows traces of its earlier baroque layout, includes a 17th-century chapel.
