To make a day of it

Haus Achternberg stands in Essen (Essen), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Haus Achternberg, in the Kray district of Essen, survives today only as a fragment: the sole standing structure is the former gatehouse of the courtyard, topped by a shallow pyramidal roof. First mentioned in the twelfth century, the manor changed hands several times, passing from the lords von Heege to the knights von Asbeck zu Goor and later to the Wendt von Hardenberg family. A fire destroyed most of the buildings in 1905, leaving only this gatehouse, built in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries from Ruhr sandstone in a Renaissance style. Traces of the former moats, now filled in, can still be made out in the surrounding ground.
