Burg Altendorf survives as a ruin on a small peninsula south of the Ruhr, in the Essen district that now bears its name. Built in the second half of the 12th century, it holds the largest surviving Romanesque keep between the Rhine and the Weser, standing over twenty metres tall. The site is divided into an outer bailey with the remains of corner towers and an inner ward enclosed by a wall, linked to the keep by a modern steel footbridge. Inside the keep, a modern spiral staircase leads up to a viewing platform.
