To make a day of it

Gutenburg (Hochrhein) stands in Waldshut-Tiengen (Landkreis Waldshut), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Gutenburg stands in ruins above the deep valley carved by the Schlücht river, at the foot of the southern Black Forest, on a granite outcrop that withstood erosion. The site began as a watchtower built in the tenth century by the Abbey of St Gallen, before a noble family raised a proper castle around it from the twelfth century onward. Ownership of the Gutenburg then passed repeatedly between noble families, knights and the monastery of St Blasien, until it was deliberately burned in 1640 to end its use as a stronghold. Visitors come today for the remains of this layered history and for the commanding view over the entrance to the Klettgau.
