The Dammgut Ritterhude stands on the site of a moated castle built in 1305 by the knights of Hude, at the ford across the Hamme river, then the only overland route between Hamburg and Bremen. Destroyed during the Seven Years' War in 1757, the stronghold was rebuilt as a manor estate that has belonged to the Gröning family since the late eighteenth century. Today's manor house, a two storey building surrounded by intact moats, sits beside a landscape park laid out after 1800 along the Hamme. Inside, a staircase, a fireplace and several eighteenth century tiled stoves have been preserved.
