To make a day of it

Burgstall Mühlhausen stands in Affing (Landkreis Aichach-Friedberg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burgstall Mühlhausen marks the site of a former hilltop castle on the Lechrain ridge, near the village of Mühlhausen in the municipality of Affing. Likely established in the 12th century by a family of ministeriales serving the Wittelsbachs, it was abandoned by the early 15th century and no standing structures remain. What visitors find today is a system of ditches, earthen ramparts and terraces that still outline the layout of the medieval stronghold, including its main enclosure and several outer defensive works. Part of the site was damaged by a former gravel pit, whose traces are still visible to the south.

What to know

  • No buildings remain on site; the visit consists of walking through earthen ditches and ramparts in a wooded setting.
  • The terrain slopes steeply toward the Lech valley, so a reasonable level of fitness is needed.
  • A former gravel pit destroyed part of the outer bailey to the south, which affects how that section reads today.
  • This is an open-air archaeological site with no visitor facilities or set opening hours.
  • The visit takes place outdoors, with no guide or interpretive signage mentioned in available sources.
