Burgstall Kissing stands in Kissing (Landkreis Aichach-Friedberg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burgstall Kissing occupies a rise above the Lech valley, south of the parish church of Altkissing, where a small motte once stood around the year 1000 as the seat of the lords of Kissing. Nothing survives of the original medieval structures, but the roughly eight metre high earthen mound and the ditches of the outer bailey remain clearly traceable on the ground. A baroque pilgrimage chapel, built from the late 17th century onward, now occupies the spot where the castle's main tower once stood. The hilltop also commands wide views across the Lech valley and, on clear days, toward the Alps.
What to know
- The site can be visited freely and at any time, as it is an open-air earthwork with no medieval building left standing.
- Access is on foot from Altkissing, via a path leading up to the mound's plateau.
- What remains to be seen is mainly the shape of the terrain, the mound and ditches, along with the baroque chapel that now stands where the tower once did.
- A visit is short, likely a matter of minutes rather than hours, and suits visitors of all ages.
- The climb is modest and rewarded by wide views over the Lech valley and, in good weather, the Alps.
