To make a day of it

Burgstall Kirchberg (Bad Reichenhall) stands in Bad Reichenhall (Bad Reichenhall), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burgstall Kirchberg marks the site of a vanished hilltop castle atop the Kirchberg, also known as Doktorberg, west of Bad Reichenhall's old town. Built in the first half of the 12th century by the lords of Kirchberg, it once guarded the salt road leading into Reichenhall. The stronghold was destroyed as early as 1262 during a dispute between the Duke of Bavaria and the Archbishop of Salzburg and was never rebuilt. Today only a few overgrown wall fragments remain to testify to the former fortress.

What to know

  • The site lies on private land, at the top of the Kirchberg hill west of the old town.
  • Only scattered wall remnants survive, largely overgrown by vegetation.
  • There is no standing structure to visit, this is a historic site rather than a preserved monument.
  • The site forms part of the Reichenhaller Burgenweg, a trail connecting several former fortified sites in the area.
