To make a day of it
Burgruine Karlstein stands in Bad Reichenhall (Bad Reichenhall), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burgruine Karlstein stands on a steep rock above the Thumsee near Bad Reichenhall, reached only by a long metal staircase at the end of a hiking trail. Built shortly before 1150 by Konrad von Peilstein, the fortress passed to the Duke of Bavaria in the 13th century and was later converted into a manor house by the Fröschl von Marzoll und Tauerstein family before falling into ruin at the end of the 17th century. Visitors can still see a round-arched gate, the remains of a square cistern and a circular keep dating from the first half of the 13th century.
What to know
