To make a day of it

Burg Wolbeck stands in Münster (Münster), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Wolbeck, near Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia, was the residence of the prince-bishops of Münster outside the city walls, built around an octagonal keep at the confluence of the Angel and Piepenbach streams. Enlarged in the late Middle Ages into a two-winged residence under Prince-Bishop Florenz von Wevelinghoven, it lost its political importance after the sixteenth century and later served the bishops mainly as a hunting ground. Badly damaged by French artillery during the Seven Years' War, it was demolished in 1767, its stones reused for the new episcopal residence in Münster. Only faint earthworks mark the site today.

What to know

  • The castle was completely demolished in 1767, so there are no standing buildings to visit.
  • Only slight ground undulations still mark the former site of the stronghold.
  • The nearby Drostenhof, built in Weser Renaissance style, is sometimes mistakenly identified as Burg Wolbeck itself.
  • No opening hours, fees or accessibility details exist, as the site survives only as earthworks.
