To make a day of it

Burg Ottersberg stands in Ottersberg (Landkreis Verden), in Lower Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Ottersberg was a late medieval stronghold founded around 1305 by the Archbishop of Bremen on an island formed by two branches of the river Wümme, at a strategically important crossing. The medieval structure, later rebuilt as a star-shaped fortress from the late 16th century and largely dismantled afterwards, survives only as an earthen rampart, roughly half of it still standing, with moats traceable on three sides. The grounds have belonged to a Rudolf Steiner school since the 1960s, making this a site for those interested in archaeology and local history rather than a built monument open for touring.

What to know

  • No standing buildings remain, only earthworks and moat remnants are visible on site.
  • The land belongs to a Rudolf Steiner school, which may limit access to parts of the area.
  • A car park now covers part of the eastern side of the former fortification.
  • The visit suits those interested in archaeology or local history rather than visitors expecting a built castle.
  • No opening hours, fees or visitor facilities are documented for this site.
