To make a day of it
Burg Nienhaus stands in Papenburg (Landkreis Emsland), in Lower Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.
The Burg Nienhaus has long since vanished: nothing of the original structure stands today, only the memory of a late medieval stronghold south of Aschendorf, a district of Papenburg. Built around 1266 by the Bishop of Münster to curb the neighbouring town's ambitions for independence, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times before disappearing for good in the 17th century. Visitors find a tree-covered mound on site, long mistaken for the fortress location, and the present Amtshaus, a 19th-century building near the original spot.
What to know
- No visible remains of the medieval castle survive; the site today is a meadow with a tree-covered mound.
- The mound long believed to mark the fortress's location turned out, in recent excavations, to be a 19th-century addition.
- The present Amtshaus, 150 metres from the original site, dates from 1832-1833 and is not open as a monument connected to the castle.
- A visit amounts mainly to walking an archaeological site with no visible structures, better seen as a historical curiosity than a tourist destination.
