The Harderwykenburg stands on a geest hillock in Leer and ranks among the oldest surviving buildings in East Frisia. Its core is a three-storey tower house raised around 1470, with walls up to three meters thick in places. In the 17th century a low U-shaped wing was added and the gable was reworked in a plain Renaissance style, giving the building its present appearance. It survives as a record of how East Frisian chieftains lived before the rise of the counts.
