To make a day of it

Burg Neu-Fürstenberg stands in Vöhrenbach (Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burg Neu-Fürstenberg is a ruined stronghold on a rocky spur 810 metres high, above the point where the Urach flows into the Breg, in the Hammereisenbach-Bregenbach district of Vöhrenbach. Likely built around 1360 by the Counts of Fürstenberg over an earlier 12th-century site, it once guarded the road linking the Baar and the Breisgau regions and, from the 16th century, the ore deposits of the Eisenbach valley. What survives today is mainly the foundations of the core castle and a massive shield wall, still fifteen metres tall, that once shielded it from the west.

What to know

  • The site sits on a rocky spur at 810 metres, so reaching it involves an uphill walk.
  • This is an open-air ruin, with no roofed building or indoor exhibition.
