To make a day of it

Burg Hornfels stands in Grenzach-Wyhlen (Landkreis Lörrach), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Hornfels refers to the remains of an earthwork fortification on a rocky spur at Grenzach-Wyhlen, close to the Swiss border. The site saw two distinct occupation phases separated by many centuries: an initial fortification from the late Urnfield period, around 900 BC, followed by a rebuilding in the early Middle Ages, around 900 AD, with a more substantial earthen rampart. Today visitors find mainly a wooded ridge overlooking the Rhine, where faint traces of a dry-stone wall and a rampart can still be made out.

What to know

  • Visiting means walking through woodland, without any visitor facilities or signage infrastructure.
  • The area lies within the Buchswald nature reserve, close to Germany's southwesternmost vineyard.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or accessibility information are available, as this is a freely accessible natural site.
