Burg Elmendorf lies in the Dreibergen nature reserve on the northern shore of the Zwischenahner Meer, near Bad Zwischenahn. It is not a standing castle but the remains of a motte, two earthen mounds that once carried timber towers. Excavations carried out in the 1960s showed that the site had already been settled in the 9th century, long before the mounds seen today were raised in the 12th century. Visitors come here for an open-air archaeological site set within a protected natural landscape rather than for any surviving building.
