Burg auf dem Süllberg stands in Altona (Hamburg), in Hamburg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burg auf dem Süllberg refers to a fortification, now vanished, that once stood on top of the Süllberg hill in Altona (Hamburg). Two successive strongholds were built there during the Middle Ages, the first around 1060 under Archbishop Adalbert I of Hamburg and Bremen, the second in 1258 at the initiative of the Counts of Schauenburg and Holstein, both intended to guard the crossing point over the Elbe. No structural remains survive today, and the former site is now occupied by restaurants and cafés. A visit is therefore more about the site and its view over the river than about any physical ruins.
What to know
- No visible remains survive of the two medieval strongholds that once stood on the hill.
- The site today hosts restaurants and cafés rather than any heritage visitor facilities.
- The Süllberg hill offers a view over the Elbe, which remains the main appeal of the spot.
- The location lies in Altona, in the Blankenese district of Hamburg.
