To make a day of it

Bürener Burgen stands in Büren (Kreis Paderborn), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Büren Castles no longer stand: the medieval stronghold once rose at the northwestern edge of Büren's old town, on the ground now occupied by the Mauritiusschule. Likely founded as early as the mid-12th century, it was long split between two branches of the lords of Büren before passing to the prince-bishops of Paderborn and later the Jesuits. Nothing of the structure remains above ground, as it was torn down in 1716 to make way for a college building.

What to know

  • No building of the medieval castle survives, since the site was entirely redeveloped in the 18th century.
  • The former castle grounds now correspond to the Mauritiusschule and its immediate surroundings in Büren's old town.
  • There is no organized visit or dedicated access, as this is a vanished site rather than a preserved monument.
  • Anyone interested in the history can only take a walk through Büren's old town, without any tourist infrastructure on site.
