The site listed as Bodendenkmal D-2-7538-0172, in Eching, marks the remains of a medieval motte, a fortified earthen mound now vanished above ground. Located in a wooded area near the hamlet of Hüttenfurth, above the confluence of the Schloßbach and Gleißenbach streams, the circular structure spanned about 40 metres across, ringed by a moat and an outer bank. In the 11th century it served as the seat of the Hittenfurte family. Excavations there uncovered hard-fired, blackish-grey pottery shards.

What to know

  • No standing structure remains, only ground traces of a former motte.
  • The site lies in a forest, roughly 200 metres east of the isolated hamlet of Hüttenfurth.
  • The western part, at the forest edge, is still recognisable, while the eastern part, now farmland, has been largely levelled.
  • There are no opening hours, fees, or visitor facilities at this archaeological site.
