To make a day of it

Bodendenkmal in Arnstorf, #D-2-7442-0130 stands in Arnstorf (Landkreis Rottal-Inn), in Bavaria, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

South of the hamlet of Döttenberg, part of the municipality of Arnstorf, a low mound in the landscape marks the site of a former motte castle that has long since vanished above ground. The mound, rising roughly three metres above its surroundings, now carries a farmstead, and faint traces of an encircling ditch can still be made out in places. This is not a castle open for visits but an archaeological earthwork, lying some sixty metres from the parish chapel of St Peter and close to the Kollbach stream.

What to know

  • No standing structure remains, only an earthen mound that now carries a private farmstead.
  • The site lies on agricultural land, with no visitor paths or signage.
  • There are no opening hours or fees, since there is no accessible monument as such.
  • Traces of the surrounding ditch are faint and require a trained eye to notice.
  • The nearby St Peter's chapel in Döttenberg can serve as a landmark for finding the location.
