To make a day of it

Bacherswall stands in Neubrandenburg (Landkreis Mecklenburgische Seenplatte), in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Bacherswall is a former Slavic timber stronghold built in the 7th century on the Nonnenhof peninsula, within the Lieps lake near Neubrandenburg. It served as a refuge for the surrounding population during times of war and reached its peak in the second half of the 8th century, before being abandoned in the early 9th century. The raising of the water level caused by a mill built in Neubrandenburg flooded most of the site in the 13th century, leaving the bulk of the structure submerged to this day.

What to know

  • Most of the former fortified area, around 9,200 m² out of a total 10,000 m², now lies below the lake's water level.

  • The legendary Slavic sanctuary of Rethra is believed to have stood nearby, on islands in Lake Tollensesee or within the Lieps.
