The Altes Schloss stands on a rocky spur above the Schwarzach river, at the very origin of the town of Neunburg vorm Wald. Built around 900 as a stone stronghold, it was later converted into a residence by the Wittelsbach palatine counts and dukes, who held court there for more than a century from 1354 onward. What remains today includes the late Gothic watchtower, the castle gate, and remnants of the walls and moat that once divided the fortress from the settlement below.
