To make a day of it

Burgstall Altenthannstein stands in Thanstein (Landkreis Schwandorf), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgstall Altenthannstein marks the site of a vanished medieval hilltop castle, standing at 635 metres above the hamlet of Dautersdorf in the municipality of Thanstein. Built in the 13th century by the lords of Tannstein as their ancestral seat, it survives only as faint traces: the outline of a tower and buildings, a surrounding ditch, and a small well. Visitors come mainly for the forest setting and the hilltop position rather than for standing ruins.

What to know

  • The site lies in woodland about 350 metres north of the St. Ägidius chapel, reached on foot via a forest path.
  • No standing buildings remain: only a ditch, a small well, and faint ground traces mark where the castle once stood.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, as this is an open-air site without visitor facilities.
  • Sturdy footwear is advisable, since the terrain is a wooded hilltop.
  • The site is recorded as an archaeological ground monument, which explains the lack of visible structures.
