To make a day of it

Abschnittsbefestigung Heiligkreuz stands in Trostberg (Landkreis Traunstein), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Abschnittsbefestigung Heiligkreuz was a medieval hilltop fortification, now vanished, that once stood on a spur overlooking the Alz river, in what is today the Heiligkreuz district of Trostberg. Protected by a defensive earthwork on a promontory steep on three sides, the site retains only faint traces of its rampart and ditch, largely flattened and built over by the settlement. It is best understood as an archaeological location rather than a castle one can tour.

What to know

  • Almost nothing of the original fortification remains visible, only faint traces of rampart and ditch.
  • The site sits on ground that falls steeply on three sides, above the Alz river.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or visitor facilities are documented for this site.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
  • The visit mainly suits those interested in medieval archaeology rather than an intact castle.
