What the French Ministry of Culture records

Dans la lutte qui oppose les Chalon aux Vienne pour la domination de la région de Lons-le-Saunier, Jean de Chalon érige en 1253 une forteresse. En 1445, le château acquiert sa physionomie actuelle. Il se compose d'un donjon rectangulaire, d'un corps de logis et d'une courtine pentagonale flanquée de tours demi-circulaires protégeant une cour intérieure. Le bourg fortifié et la basse cour sont abandonnés au milieu du 17e siècle. En 1674, le château est démantelé. Au 18e siècle, il devient gentilhommière. Exploitation viticole après 1845. Restauré en 1923 par l'architecte Georges Martin.
