The château de Vaux, in the Moselle department, retains within one of its wings a medieval remnant with walls a metre thick, thought to be a former defensive tower of the fortified village. The building passed through several notable owners, from the heirs of a prefecture secretary general to a German champagne merchant, before becoming a retirement home and later a wine estate. Today the site is chiefly known for its vineyard, replanted in the 1980s and farmed biodynamically since the late 1990s.
