To make a day of it
Château de Vauguillain stands in Saint-Julien-du-Sault (Yonne), in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 13th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Perched on a hilltop above Saint-Julien-du-Sault and the Yonne valley, the Vauguillain site preserves the remains of a 12th century stronghold once used as a residence by the archbishops of Sens before it was torn down in the 17th century. Among the surviving ramparts stands the round tower known as the tour Baron, while the adjoining chapel, the only structure left standing, survived through centuries of upkeep by local villagers. The place is best approached today as a viewpoint and an archaeological trace rather than a standing castle.
